Ancient
Philosopher
Diogenes of Sinope was the most radical of the Cynic philosophers, believing that virtue was better revealed in action than in theory. He chose to live like a dog, discarding all social conventions and material possessions to live in a large ceramic storage jar in the Athenian marketplace.\n\n- He famously carried a lamp during the day, claiming to be looking for a single 'honest man.'\n- When Alexander the Great met him and offered any favor, Diogenes simply asked the king to stand out of his sunlight.\n- He was known for eating, sleeping, and even relieving himself in public to prove his disdain for 'civilized' hypocrisy.\n\nDiogenes used biting wit and public indecency to challenge the corruption of Greek society. His 'philosophy of the street' remains a shocking example of anti-establishment thought from the ancient world.
