Modern
Aviator
Douglas Corrigan became an American folk hero under the most absurd of circumstances. After aviation authorities officially denied his request to fly across the Atlantic, he filed a flight plan from Brooklyn to California. However, after taking off in his scrappy, modified aircraft, he landed in Dublin, Ireland, 28 hours later.
Corrigan represents a strange brand of mid-century rebellion. While professional aviators were focusing on speed and precision, he turned navigation into a comedic act of performance art. His 'mistake' forced the world to watch as he ignored the boundaries set by the government, landing himself in the history books not for technical mastery, but for his sheer, stubborn insistence on being in the wrong place at the right time.
