Physician and Rogue Agent
Georg Anton Schäffer was a man whose ambition vastly exceeded his station. While officially serving as a physician for the Russian-American Company, he developed a grandiose plan to seize the island of Kauai for the Russian Empire.
Schäffer's adventure is a testament to the strange fluidity of the nineteenth-century world. With little more than diplomatic maneuvering, construction tools, and sheer nerve, he nearly convinced a Pacific kingdom to join a distant European empire. When his scheme eventually collapsed, he left behind a trail of abandoned forts and confusion. He represents the rogue element of imperial expansion, where individual ego could potentially rewrite the maps of the world, even if only for a brief, bizarre moment.
