Biography

The Military Surgeon

Dr. James Barry was a highly respected inspector general and a brilliant surgeon in the British Army. Known for a volatile temper and high - pitched voice, Barry was a pioneer in hygiene and performed one of the first successful caesarean sections in Africa where both mother and child survived. Despite a successful career spanning decades, Barry was a private individual who left strict instructions that his body should not be examined after death.

The Hidden Secret

When Barry died of influenza in 1865, the charwoman who prepared the body for burial discovered a shocking truth. The decorated military officer was biologically female. It was revealed that Barry was born Margaret Ann Bulkley and had assumed the male persona to enter medical school, a feat impossible for women at the time. The British Army, embarrassed by the revelation, suppressed the records for nearly a century. Barry lived over fifty years as a man, successfully navigating the highest circles of Victorian society.
