Indigent and Former Fireman
Michael Malloy, a homeless Irishman in Prohibition-era New York, became the target of a murder-for-insurance plot by five acquaintances known as the 'Murder Trust.' The group took out multiple policies on Malloy and attempted to kill him through extreme alcohol consumption, assuming his heavy drinking would make it look accidental.\n\n- They served him wood alcohol (poison), which he drank repeatedly without ill effect.\n- They fed him sandwiches filled with spoiled sardines, glass shards, and metal shavings, which he reportedly enjoyed.\n- They eventually stripped him naked and left him in -26°C weather, only for him to show up the next morning asking for another drink.\n\nMalloy’s resilience became a dark local legend known as 'Iron Mike.' The conspirators eventually succeeded by using a gas hose, but their suspicious behavior led to their swift arrest and execution in the electric chair.
