Biography

Master of the Macabre

Known by the stage name "Robertson," Étienne - Gaspard Robert was a Belgian physicist who transformed the magic lantern into a tool of terror. In late 18th - century Paris, he staged elaborate shows called "Phantasmagoria" inside a ruined Capuchin convent. He used hidden projectors on wheels to make ghostly images grow and shrink, creating the illusion of spirits flying toward the audience. He even used ventriloquism and smoke to enhance the dread of the crowd.

Science and Spectacle

Beyond his horror shows, Robertson was a pioneer in ballooning and atmospheric science. He once reached a record altitude in a hot - air balloon to conduct experiments on magnetism and electricity. However, it was his obsession with the optical illusion that cemented his legacy. He claimed he could bring the dead back to life through light, and his spectacles laid the foundations for modern horror cinema and special effects. He was a man who walked the line between a serious scientist and a gothic showman.
