Island
An island filled with thousands of decaying dolls hanging from trees, placed by a hermit to appease the spirit of a drowned girl. The hermit was eventually found dead in the same spot where he claimed the girl drowned.
Deep within the canals of Xochimilco lies the Isla de las Muñecas, a nightmare of plastic and rot. The story began in the 1950s when a hermit named Don Julian Santana Barrera moved to the island seeking solitude. He claimed to have found the body of a drowned girl and her doll floating in the water. To appease her restless spirit, he hung the doll from a tree. For the next fifty years, he collected thousands of discarded dolls from trash heaps and canals, hanging them across the island in various states of decay—some missing limbs, others with hollow eyes or decapitated heads. Julian believed the dolls were possessed by the spirits of dead children and would whisper to him at night, protecting him from evil. In a chilling twist of fate, Julian was found dead in 2001, drowned in the exact same spot where he claimed to have found the girl decades earlier. The island now serves as a haunting monument to obsession, isolation, and the blurred lines between folklore and madness, attracting those curious about its strange energy.
