Modern
Military Prison
Originally built as an infirmary, it served as a brutal military prison for the Tsarist, Nazi, and Soviet regimes. It is the only prison in Europe from which no one ever successfully escaped.
Built at the turn of the 20th century, Karosta was never intended to be a comfortable place. It served as a high-security military detention center for the Russian Empire, then the Nazis, and finally the Soviet Union. The prison is notorious for its discipline, where soldiers were sent for minor infractions and subjected to psychological torture and hard labor. Thousands of people passed through its heavy iron doors, and many were executed within its walls during the various political shifts of the 1900s. The site is shrouded in ghost stories, particularly that of the White Lady, a ghost said to haunt the corridors. Today, it remains almost exactly as it was during the Soviet era, with peeling paint, original cell doors, and propaganda posters. It is famous for offering a prison experience where guests pay to be harassed, fed cold gruel, and locked in cells, providing a chilling look at the brutal realities of military incarceration.
