Medieval
Castle
A medieval fortress notorious for its role in the Salzburg Witch Trials and later legends of werewolves stalking the surrounding woods.
Standing atop a craggy spur in the Austrian Alps, Moosham Castle, also known as Witches Castle, hides a history far darker than its medieval stone walls suggest. While its foundations date back to a Roman fortress, it became infamous during the Salzburg Witch Trials between 1675 and 1690. Unlike many trials that targeted women, the Zaubererjackl trials held here were uniquely focused on the marginalized—specifically homeless men and beggars. Over 139 people were executed, including dozens of children as young as ten years old, many of whom were tortured in the castle’s deep, damp dungeons before being branded or burned. The castle's terror did not end with the trials; in the late 18th century, it became the epicenter of a werewolf hysteria. Local farmers discovered scores of mutilated cattle and deer in the surrounding woods, leading to a frantic hunt for shapeshifters. Several residents were accused of lycanthropy and subsequently murdered by superstitious mobs. Today, the castle remains a chilling site where visitors report the sounds of heavy boots in the corridors and the desperate cries of the Jackl-followers echoing from the lightless pits of the torture chambers. It is a monument to how quickly social paranoia can spiral into state-sanctioned slaughter and local legend.
