Medieval
Castle
A Renaissance castle built into the mouth of a massive cave, featuring a secret network of tunnels and the site of one of history's most ignominious deaths.
Predjama Castle is a marvel of medieval engineering, perched precariously on a 123-meter high limestone cliff. The castle is integrated directly into the entrance of a cavern, blending man-made stone with natural rock formations. In the 15th century, it became the stronghold of Erasmus of Lueg, a rebellious knight who became a folk hero by robbing the rich to help the poor. During a year-long siege by the Holy Roman Empire, Erasmus utilized a secret passage through the cave system behind the castle to bring in fresh food and supplies, mocking his enemies by throwing cherries and roasted meat over the walls. However, the siege ended in a truly strange and ignominious fashion. A disgruntled servant was bribed to signal when Erasmus was in the most vulnerable part of the castle: the latrine, which was situated on an outer wall. When the signal was given, a single cannonball was fired, ending the life of the Slovenian Robin Hood in his most private moment. Visitors today can explore the torture chamber located in a damp cave nook and the extensive tunnels that once provided a lifeline to the besieged fortress. The castle remains a haunting silhouette against the cliffside, a monument to both ingenuity and an exceptionally unlucky death that has become the stuff of legend.
