The Black Mausoleum

Tomb

Built 1691 Edinburgh, United Kingdom

Located in Greyfriars Kirkyard, this tomb houses the remains of Bloody George Mackenzie, a judge who ruthlessly persecuted the Covenanters. It is the reported home of the Mackenzie Poltergeist, a spirit blamed for hundreds of physical attacks on visitors.

About this Place

Greyfriars Kirkyard is a place of immense beauty and dark legend, but no spot is more feared than the Black Mausoleum. This stone tomb belongs to Sir George Mackenzie, the Lord Advocate who sent thousands of Presbyterian Covenanters to their deaths or into brutal imprisonment in the nearby field during the 17th century. His cruelty earned him the nickname Bloody Mackenzie. The modern haunting supposedly began in 1999 when a homeless man broke into the tomb seeking shelter and accidentally disturbed the coffins. Since then, the Mackenzie Poltergeist has become a famous paranormal phenomenon. Hundreds of tourists on official ghost tours have reported sustaining inexplicable injuries while standing near the mausoleum, including burns, scratches, and bruises. Some visitors have even collapsed or been knocked unconscious by an unseen force. The local council eventually locked the section of the cemetery where the tomb sits, though guided tours are still allowed access. The contrast between the ornate, classical architecture of the tomb and the violent reports of spiritual unrest makes it one of the most chilling historical sites in Scotland.
