Victorian
Villa
Known as the Ghost Mansion of Italy, this Victorian villa was the site of a gruesome family tragedy and was later rumored for occult use.
Hidden in the dense forests of Cortenova near Lake Como, Villa de Vecchi is widely regarded as the most haunted house in Italy. Known as the Red House, it was built in the mid-19th century by Count Felice de Vecchi, a hero of the Italian Risorgimento who envisioned a dream retreat influenced by his travels in the Orient. However, the dream quickly soured. The architect died shortly before completion, and just a few years later, the Count returned home to find his wife brutally murdered and his young daughter missing. After weeks of searching the woods in a state of madness, the Count took his own life. The house was inherited by his brother but eventually abandoned, falling into a state of beautiful, moss-covered decay. Local legends claim that the villa was later used by Aleister Crowley for occult rituals, during which a demon was supposedly summoned and left behind. Perhaps the most famous paranormal claim is the ghost piano; although the original instrument in the main hall was smashed by vandals decades ago, neighbors still report hearing the sound of melancholic music drifting from the villa on moonlit nights. With its blood-red paint fading and the mountain mist swallowing its stone walls, the villa remains a tragic monument to a family’s sudden destruction and the lingering trauma of the past.
